Violinist Bell Exploring New Talent |
|
Violinist Joshua Bell is tapping into the composer
side of himself. In an interview with The Korea Times, Bell said
he is working toward writing his own music in the next couple of
years. Classical musicians usually earn
fame for their original interpretation of existing musical pieces
and formidable performance techniques, and so did violinist Joshua
Bell.
However, Bell is looking to captivate people's hearts with a
different side of his unique musicality _ as a composer.
``One of my goals for the next couple of years is to write my own
music. My first solo violin sonata will come out next year,'' Bell
said in a telephone interview with The Korea Times last week.
``Because of my busy touring schedule, I am working on it
slowly.''
For the 39-year-old virtuoso, musical composition is not an
overnight dream coming from nowhere. He has been warming up for
his goal throughout his career; he composed cadenzas himself for
his concerto performances on stage and in recordings, including
``Leonard Bernstein: West Side Story Suit,'' and arranged music
for the violin.
Bell is like a rock star in the classical world. He is a single
man of great musicality with handsome looks, which has made female
fans' hearts flutter. This heartthrob musician was named as one of
the 50 Most Beautiful People in 2000 by People magazine and as one
of the six ``It'' Men of the Millennium by Glamour magazine.
``In a two-hour concert, good looks are not important to make
people to listen to a concert for two hours. You need more than
looks. Maybe, in advertisements, they are important,'' Bell said.

Festival of the Arts Boca expands, adds Fleming, Bell, Metheny |
The
Festival of the Arts Boca will nearly double in length for its
sophomore event in March, 2008 by sliding the culinary Boca
Bacchanal series out from the music schedule. Extending from 11
days to 17, Feb. 29-March 16, also will allow the arts fest to
expand its literary, film and educational components as well as
increasing the number of concerts.
The Boca Bacchanal food and wine festival will dominate the first
week, with the Boca Fest musical events highlighting the second
week at the Count de Hoernle Amphitheatre in Mizner Park. The
Russian National Orchestra will once again anchor the core
classical music series with several returning artists, and a grand
finale concert featuring guest soloists soprano Renee Fleming and
baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky.
The Five Browns classical piano group, Chinese pianist Lang Lang
and violinist Joshua Bell also will appear, along with returning
artists Lady Jeanne and Sir James Galway, and cellist Nina Kotova.
The expanded jazz concert schedule will include pianist Chick
Corea, guitarist Pat Metheny and vibraphonist Gary Burton, plus
Latin band Tempo Libre. Arturo Sandoval and his combo will return
for a private, pre-opening gala for sponsors.[read

| "Who Cares About Classical Music?" |
| A couple of months ago, The Washington Post
staged what it called an "experiment in context, perception and
priorities"
by bringing the celebrated concert violinist Joshua Bell and his
Stradivarius to play Bach in the D.C. Metro. The experiment,
as the Post reporter Gene Weingarten wrote, was "an
unblinking assessment of public taste: In a banal setting at an
inconvenient time, would beauty transcend?"
The answer, of course, was, "No." During the forty-five minutes
of Bell's rush hour performance, only a few people stopped to
listen, and the artist, who routinely sells out the world's great
concert halls, earned precisely $32.17 for his efforts. What does
this experiment teach us? ...
