Festival del SOle
Festival del Sole, a ten-day arts festival is returning to the Napa Valley for a second season July 13-22. The festival lures top talent in the opera and classical music fields to wine country including mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, violinists Joshua Bell and Nikolaj Znaider, sopranos Danielle de Niese and Lisa Delan, countertenor David Daniels, pianists Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Fabio Bidini and violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky. Performances will be at the Lincoln Theater, Napa Valley Opera House and the Castello di Amorosa wine castle in Calistoga.

Also on the agenda are special lunches featuring local vinters and esteemed chefs such as Cat Cora and Gary Danko as well as winery dinners at places such as the Clos Pegase Winery, Darioush Winery and Far Niente. A festival pass to the entire event costs $6,000 per person ($2200 tax-deductible) but you can also buy weekend and day passes or tickets to individual concerts and winery events. The Napa festival is the companion to a similar event in Cortona, Italy on August 4-16.

Poetic musicality;

UNITED STATES violin virtuoso Joshua Bell returns to the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas stage from July 13 to 15 to collaborate with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) under the baton of its principal conductor Matthias Bamert to perform Serge Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No.1 in D (Op.19).

For over two decades, Joshua Bell has been captivating audiences worldwide and is known for his poetic musicality. He came to national attention at 14 with his highly acclaimed orchestral debut with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra. This was followed by a Carnegie Hall debut, the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant and a recording contract that has further confirmed his unique presence in the music world.

Today, he has performed with many leading orchestras and conductors, and recorded 30 albums, with his most recent effort in the soundtrack of Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story. His curiosity and multifaceted musical interests have taken him in exciting directions, forging a unique career that has earned him the rare title of classical music superstar.

The MPO will also close the current season with Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No.6 in A, as well as perform Richard Wagner’s Prelude: The Mastersingers. Tickets are priced from RM20 to RM95. Call the box office (% 03- 2051 7007/ fax: 03- 2051 7077) or e-mail dfp_boxoffice@petronas.com.myfor bookings.
